I’m not sure if I’m going to be able to do it. I’m going to be able to do it.
In the course of understanding the history of World War II, I wonder if you have ever had some wild fantasies. For example, when the German army was able to receive full logistical support from the United States, would its combat power climb to an unprecedented peak and become an unstoppable torrent on the battlefield? And would the Soviet Union’s tidal wave of manpower, combined with Japan’s tactics of destruction, create an invincible army that would be unstoppable? What will be the outcome when these two very different forces collide? Will the sophisticated strategy and industrial strength of the German-American alliance have the last laugh, or will the Soviet Union and Japan prevail?

The list of such scenarios is as long as the stars. However, these scenarios are ultimately just fantasies based on fragments of history, hypotheses and explorations of historical possibilities, and cannot change the dusty chapters of history that have already been settled. Fortunately, while the wheel of history cannot be turned back, the world of gaming provides a stage for us to realize these fantasies. That could be the macro battlefields of Iron Hearts, or KARDS, the protagonist of this interview. A microscopic sandbox created by the 1939 Games studio.
The list goes on and on. However, they are only fantasies based on fragments of history, hypotheses and explorations of the possibilities of history, and cannot change the dusty chapters of history that have already settled.
Fortunately, although the wheel of history cannot be reversed, the world of the game provides a stage for us to realize these fantasies.
That could be the macro battlefields of Iron Hearts, or KARDS, the protagonist of this interview. A microscopic sandbox created by the 1939 Games studio.
We had the pleasure of chatting with the production team at 1939 Games and put together this article based on the information they provided.
KARDS is a WWII-themed card game created by a group of old Icelandic denizens, currently available on steam Android and ios, with overall gameplay somewhat similar to Hearthstone, but with very different textures. The reason why the game will show such a unique difference, according to the developer’s point of view that we learned in the interview, it stems from their project at the beginning of the start of a clear core objective to build a card game that can simulate large-scale war. They believe that only in this way can they truly portray the magnificence and complexity of World War II in a comprehensive and profound way.

In order to do this, they have designed infantry units and such, the game uses regiments or divisions of such large military formations, so that players can feel that they are senior generals on the battlefield, commanding the overall strategy and tactics, rather than personally pulling the trigger on the soldiers. This makes playing it feel like playing the role of a commander on the battlefield, personally commanding the troops to fight in the front line in the back line to mobilize, and organizing the coordination of defense, as well as attack.
We came across this game after watching a battle between the British and Italian Allies and the Japanese and German Allied Forces on B-site. In terms of tone, it’s a defensive battle. The attacking side is an allied force dominated by Japan with some German troops mixed in, while the defending side is dominated by the British, but with most of the members coming from the Italian alliance. At the beginning of the battle, the British quickly dispatched the Fifth Infantry Brigade to build up defenses around their headquarters, as they had received advance news of the enemy’s impending attack.

At the beginning of the battle, the British quickly dispatched the 5th Infantry Brigade to build up defenses around their headquarters, having intercepted the news of an impending enemy attack.
The Japanese sent the 40th Cavalry on a reconnaissance mission. During the skirmish between the two, the British lured the enemy deeper into the fortifications, the advantage of the British side, successfully captured most of the members of the cavalry unit, the initial battle was a great victory. Despite the victory, some members of the cavalry unit escaped back to the headquarters. This exposed the location of the infantry brigade and the British side of the deployment of information, the Japanese side then mobilized the air force to implement precision strikes, paralyzed the infantry brigade’s combat power in one fell swoop, but also dispatched the 35T tanks and two cavalry unit to form a formidable offensive, blitzed. The British headquarters was in a critical state of weakness. Just in the nick of time, the Italian 7th Mountain Regiment arrived at the front line as if they were divine soldiers.

With the knowledge of mountain warfare and the support of fortifications, they advanced and retreated, firmly blocked the enemy’s offensive, and even launched a small-scale counterattack. This counterattack not only succeeded in routing the 738th Hunter Regiment at the Japanese rear, but also took advantage of the opportunity to destroy a number of fighters, with brilliant results. In order to expand the advantage, the British side quickly organized the navy and air force to intercept the Japanese support forces, and by the way, launched the spirit of Rome , prompting the mountain regiment explosive seed awakening, incarnation of World War II Superman, one for a hundred, lone soldier hand demolished the intact Japanese headquarters!

This is the end of the story of the battle adapted from the actual KARDS game. The root of the story is a live commentary video made by Mr. Xiao Minger, a B-station uploader, titled “Do you call this Italian infantry? The story is based on a live commentary video made by B.com user Mr. Xiao Minger, in which the user is using an Anglo-Italian themed defensive armor stacking deck, and the opponent is using a Japanese/German fast attacker. The reason why we made up this story is because we feel that this is the best way to show the unique atmosphere of KARDS that follows history but transcends it, especially the Icelandic’s unique understanding of World War II.

The reason I say it follows history is because the game’s card design is extremely well thought out and on point. Representing the peak of the German armored forces of the Tiger tank, for example, this card in the game has a very strong offensive and defensive capabilities, once as long as the appearance, can become an insurmountable obstacle on the battlefield, belongs to the symbol of the steady, characteristics very consistent with the status of the Tiger in World War II. Then there are various military units specific to the regiment and battalion. Their performance in the game, many of them have a point of contact with the historical achievements, belong to the abstraction and generalization of history.

Then there are various military units specific to the regiment and battalion. Their performance in the game, many of them have a point of contact with the historical achievements, belong to the abstraction and generalization of history.
The reason for this effect is that the developers used a mixture of ideas when designing the cards. The developers say, “Sometimes, we will design specific numerical effects around the historical status of a unit’s performance, such as tanks like the Tiger, as well as most tanks and aircraft units. In other cases, we decide on a unit’s mechanics and values, and then look to history to find matching characters; most common infantry units are created this way.

On top of that, the developers cleverly borrowed the art style of World War II propaganda posters to create a distinctive visual experience. This was a stroke of genius, as it not only created a strong World War II atmosphere, which is a core element that KARDS players love, but it also brought the game’s units to life, making the character of the era pop out at you, and greatly enhancing the player’s sense of immersion. The formation of this unique art style did not happen overnight. According to the developers, in the early stages of the project, they tried to utilize historical black and white photographs to give the game’s visuals uniqueness and seriousness. It was during this exploration that they stumbled upon numerous original war poster artworks and had the whim to incorporate these poster elements into the game’s command card design.

As their attempts deepened, they realized that the war posters fit the game extremely well. This discovery made them realize the great potential of this idea. So they began to explore the possibility of using only artwork to create the game’s visuals, experimenting with licensing, commissioning, and using public domain poster artwork, thus successfully taking the game’s visual presentation to a new level. It’s something they’ve always been proud of, and KARDS, in doing so, has surpassed many 3A World War II games in terms of historical themes.

It surpasses history because the game is realistic enough to offer players many unimagined paths. For example, allowing players to freely select two camps to form a deck, thus realizing the combination of the United States and the Soviet Union, the combination of the United States and Germany, the combination of the Soviet Union and Japan, so that the original enemies collaborate with each other, so that the Katyusha and Tiger collaborative dance together.
It is beyond history because the game is realistic enough, but also provides players with many unimagined paths.
In particular, the Spirit of Rome is a series of command cards. The effects of these cards can be quite abstract, and it’s hard to find suitable archetypes in history that are supposed to be immersion busters. However, with the right naming and graphics, they are perfectly integrated into the game, creating a marvelous chemistry with the various camps and units, such as killing a Tiger tank with a Samurai blade, thus providing WWII enthusiasts with an apt sense of satisfaction.

The effects of these cards can be quite abstract, and it’s hard to find suitable archetypes for them in history, so it’s logical that they should be an immersion buster.

It made me wonder about the flexible minds of the development team. Here’s what they had to say about that: In a relatively simple card game, the theme can of course be a bit over-the-top, as you mentioned. This is because KARDS’ themes, while very much based on historical facts, are not purely historical simulations. We preferred to provide a clear differentiation of styles for each country, both for gameplay variety and immersion, so it was necessary and meaningful to abstract specific concepts from history and incorporate them into the design. As for how we came up with the idea, it was mainly due to the fact that everyone in the development team had a strong interest in World War II. As a result, the game was able to incorporate command cards such as Never Surrender, Jade Shatter, Storm, and many others, which took the game’s World War II immersion to a new level.

At the end of the interview, the development team said We were very surprised to find out how popular the game is in China, and we would like to thank all of our great Chinese community members. In addition, the competitiveness and strength you have shown as players has caught our attention, which was especially evident at the 2024 World Championships, where the top four finalists were all Chinese. Keep up the good work!

The Chinese Embassy in Iceland also congratulated KARDS!
All in all, KARDS is a very refreshing game in the World War II genre, and the experience is quite unique. The problem is that the environment iterates a bit too quickly. But it’s not a problem for players like me, who play card games that are all about sentiment and not intensity; after all, I simply can’t resist the temptation to hold up a German blitzkrieg with American logistics, even if it’s an old-timey ship. KARDS will be hosting exciting events during the Chinese New Year, so stay tuned for that as well.
