FCC filing reveals Switch 2 upgrades, support for Amiibo Wi Fi 6, and more!

Documents filed by the Federal Communications Commission FCC reveal what the new Nintendo console Switch 2 will include in terms of technical upgrades.

The documents show that the Switch 2 will support Near Field Communication NFC via the right Joy Con grip like its predecessor, which likely means the console will also support Amiibo toys when playing original Switch games and Switch 2 games.

Switch 2 owners will also be able to charge the console via the USB C port on the bottom of the console or the new USB port located on the top of the device.

The Switch 2 will also support Wi Fi 6 802 11ax networks with a bandwidth of up to 80MHz, while the initial Switch console only supported Wi Fi 5 802 11ac, according to documents spotted by The Verge.

The Federal Communications Commission FCC’s documents also show that the Nintendo Switch 2’s power adapter will have a maximum voltage of 15V, the same as the first-generation Switch, but the document also mentions adapters with a maximum voltage of up to 20V, so it’s not clear if the Switch 2 will charge faster or with more power when connected to a dock.

Nintendo officially announced the Switch 2 in January with an official trailer showing off the console and the Joy Con grip. And Nintendo plans to hold a dedicated Switch 2 Nintendo Direct on April 2 to fully reveal the new console. And market research firm Circana predicts that if the Nintendo Switch 2 is released in the first half of 2025, the console will sell more than 4 million units in the U.S. alone, accounting for roughly a third of all video game console hardware sales this year.
