Hideo Kojima Shares Luca’s Involvement in Death Stranding 2 After Two-Way Running Collaboration

Yesterday, the latest trailer for Kojima Studio’s latest title, Death Stranding 2, which will be released on June 26, 2025, was released. Also at the end of the story, Italian actor Luca Marinelli Luca Marinelli will be playing the new character Neil Neil in Death Stranding 2, and Hideo Kojima took to his personal SNS account to share an anecdote related to his participation in Death Stranding 2

I first learned about Luca through the Italian movie They Call Me Jeeg, in which he played the villainous character Zingaro. I was then captivated by his performance in the Jack London autobiographical movie Martin Eden, which was released in Japan in 2020. It was such a great movie that I was involved in the promotional support for the movie when it was released. I was then contacted by the Japanese distribution company. I was told that Luca had read my review and wanted to convey his feelings directly to KOJIMA SAN, so he wanted my contact information. Shortly afterward, I received an e-mail from Luca.

In it, he wrote I grew up on Alloy Gear and I’m a huge fan of yours. I was honored to learn that you saw the movie I starred in and wanted to tell you about it directly.

During the epidemic, I moved forward with the casting of Death Stranding 2 in order. Neil is a major character, the equivalent of Max Mickelson as Cliff in Death Stranding. So if the casting doesn’t surpass that of Mads Mikkelsen, fans may not be happy.

I then also watched the Netflix movie The Old Guard in which Luca stars. After watching it, I was even more convinced that the role of Neal was the right one for Luca. So I took the plunge and sent him an email. At the time, Luca was filming The Mountain That Couldn’t Return 2022 and seemed to be in the mountains of Tibet. I don’t know if it’s true or not, but he said he had just come down from the mountains and he happened to be thinking about me before he saw my call. He said It was a spiritual experience.

Afterward, Luca came home and we had a Zoom call. I introduced him to the idea of Death Stranding 2, and he readily agreed to star in it. When I mentioned that I was looking for an actor for the rival role of Lucy, he suggested his wife, actress and director Alyssa Alyssa. They were scanned and motion-captured, despite the difficult times of the epidemic. They did a great job on set, even just watching the digitized trailer footage. I am grateful to Luca and Alyssa for agreeing to be in the movie before the script was even finished.
